Psychologist Diagnosis Process Too Fast? College Students Share Real Experiences of Depression and Anxiety Visits

I went to the psychiatrist the other day and the resident, after a brief conversation, had me take a 500+ question test set and then straight away diagnosed me with mild depression and anxiety and prescribed a month's worth of medication.

I don't feel like I've had much time to talk to my doctor, so isn't it a bit hasty to make a quick diagnosis like that? Also, I forgot to mention a situation where there is more frequent sleep loss.

I'm in my first year of college now and last semester was pretty normal.

But this semester the whole person has changed, could it be a legacy of frequent masturbation in high school? Also, if someone who isn't depressed takes depression pills, could they actually get depression or anxiety? I've also been losing my eyesight a lot lately, what should I do? I need help urgently!

Let's start by sorting out your situation and briefly analyzing-

❓ A few days ago the psychiatry resident diagnosed me with mild depression and anxiety by talking to me and then having me go through 500+ test questions before prescribing me a month's worth of medication. I don't talk to my doctor much, is it too hasty to make a diagnosis like that???? ---

- These steps you go through during a hospital psychiatric visit are actually a relatively routine process.

- Those 500+ test questions may be the appropriate scale chosen by your doctor based on your initial symptoms, which is an important reference for confirming a diagnosis of mild depression and anxiety.

- Although you feel that there is not much communication with the doctor, the doctor has been running a fast professional mind behind the scene, following the standard process of asking questions, matching scales, analyzing test results and other multi-step operations.

- On the surface it looks simple for a doctor to do, but in reality it relies on years of accumulated professional experience, just like an emergency doctor who can determine the condition at a glance.

- Also, the reality is that there is a high volume of outpatient visits and doctors need to handle each case efficiently, so sometimes it can seem fast-paced, but that's to help more people.

- The doctor prescribes a one-month dosage of medication, and suggests that you first take it as prescribed by the doctor, and if there are any significant changes in your body or mood, follow up with your doctor for timely adjustments.

❓ I actually left out a situation with more frequent dreaming. I'm a freshman now, and I was fine last semester. I was a different person the next semester. Could it be the aftermath of frequent masturbation in high school? ---

- Judging from your age, you are about 18 years old. Masturbation or ejaculation at this stage is a normal physiological phenomenon, and as long as it does not affect your daily life and study, there is no need to worry too much.

❓ There are still people who can't be depressed who take depression pills and can actually suffer from depression anxiety, -

- First of all, it should be clarified that antidepressant medications do not cause depression or anxiety per se; on the contrary, for diagnosed patients, symptomatic medication is a scientifically proven and effective form of treatment.

❓And the vision loss has been very bad lately, -

Vision loss may be related to a variety of factors, such as prolonged eye use, too much screen viewing, insufficient light, or an unbalanced diet, etc., and the causes need to be specifically investigated.
